social networking week 8 18#

I viewed some of the popular networking sites, and I will share my thoughts. Facebook was my favorite networking site, since I instantly discovered that several of my co-workers also use this site. I enjoyed contacting my co-workers. Many of my former college and high school classmates have profiles on this website. I invited one of my college friends who lives in Korea to join me on this site. She responded instantly, so hopefully we will communite on this website.
The professional website linkedin is useful if you are a job recruiter seeking candidates for a position. I saw many resumes posted on this website. 360 yahoo is an interesting network to join if you have a special interest, or curiousity about a subject. I jointed a special interest group for cats, and this site posts opinions about cats that are positive and not so positive. I viewed an interest group about rodents, and many people posted that rats can be lovable pets. I jumped at the chance of joining catster, since I am a cat owner and cat lover. I was invited to create a profile about cats, and I enjoyed writing about my cat. Catsters also gives valuable and reliable information on cat care.

week 7 technology opinion

I shared some other opinions regarding technology with CC Children's. I expressed the opinion that technology is wonderful for a library when it is working, but a disaster when there is a power outage and we have no way to help our customers.

technology thoughts week 7

I believe that one of the best resources of technology is e-mail. When you wish to contact somebody, your message can read them in a matter of hours. When you forget to send somebody a birthday card and it is the day of their birthday, you can send an e-card via the website www.hallmark.com, or www.bluemountain.com. When I want to ask somebody to conduct a library program, I e-mail them. I am shy sometimes about asking folks to conduct programs, and e-mail is a save vehicle for me.

Week 7 Wiki

I added my blog to the HCPL wiki webstie. I have formed this opinion based on reading the discovery exercises and viewing various websites. Since wikis allow freedom to add or deduct information without having vast knowledge of technology, wikis are excellent tools for librarians and other colleague groups to share information. Wikis would also be useful for library staff collaborating ideas on certain subjects. I would not use wiki for library patrons, because some of the information may not necessarily be reliable due to the freedom that wikis allow for adding information.

technorati assignment

I watched a video of Jay Leno interviewing Bill O'Reilly about his opinions on the 2008 presidential candidates. I found this video by typing "Bill O'Reilly Video in the search box. I noticed that beside the video there were tags that said Bill O'Reilly and Jay Leno.

week 6 #15

I believe that the article "Away from the Iceberg" and "New World of Librarianship
agree that we need to find the most efficient ways to serve our users. We need to keep abreast with technological trends, since this is the way to reach our users. We do not have to use technological means for technological sakes, but because we need to interact with our library users. We can no longer demand that the users physically visit us, but we need to provide resources where visiting the library is not the only option.

technorati week 6

I searched library 2.0 in blog posts and I obtained a result of 5,115 blog posts. In a blog post search, I believe that you will obtain posts through a posts search. I got 492 posts tagged library 2.0. In a tag search for a subject I believe that you will get tags, and not necessarily blogs. The one occasion when I obtained actual blogs about library 2.0 is when I searched the blog directory. I got 457 actual blogs.
The popular blog that I view in technorati was www.crooksandliars.com. I found a website that had a transcript about Bill O'Reilly's interview with Ann Coulter who is often on his show. Many viewers felt that on her most recent appearance on the Bill O'Reilly show one of her remarks was antisemetic. I am impressed that technorati covers a wide variety of subjects including tabloid information.
I conducted a search on technorati about Joel Osteen and the various opinions on his ministry. All I had to do was type Joel Osteen in the search blank and I obtained 102 posts on the subject of Joel Osteen.

delicious week 6 exercise 13

I visited del-icio-us, and I believe that this will be a useful tool for librarians, and helpful for anyone searching for valuable information. The tags organize del-icio-su in a user friendly manner, and it reminds me of table of contents in a book. Del-icio-us saves busy people the steps of having to seek for useful websites through search engines.

library elf week 5

I registered with library elf, and used my personal e-mail address instead of my staff e-mail address. Library elf would not accept my staff e-mail address. I found the exercise to be easy and straightforward. I believe that library elf is a useful service, since it is hard to remember what books you have checked out, and I like to be reminded that my holds are about to expire.

my experiences with library thing

The books that I included in library thing were Reincarnation of Peter Proud, Phantom of the Opera, Cardigan Square, Redeeming Love and the Betrayal. These choices show that my personal taste in reading includes Christian fiction, British Historical Fiction, Classics, and obscure 70's novel. I included the library thing on my blog by creating a standard blog widget. I found this option to be the simplest approach.
The HTML code
Paste this into your HTML.

What it looks like
Random books from my library
The Reincarnation of Peter Proud by Max Ehrlich
Cardigan Square by Alexandra Manners
Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers

Week 4 finding feeds

I enjoyed utilizing topix because I was able to find local news feeds in my hometown by merely typing in the zip code. I was able to subscribe to a news feed in my hometown called Ashland News. I found Feedster to be a useful tool, because Feedster appears to update news by the hour. I added a news feed from Feedster to my Blogline about Palestine. I didn't find Technorati as easy to utilize. Although it contains categories which include life, business and entertainment, I could never find a news feed that closely matched my search. I did not find the format of Syndic8.com user friendly. My favorite news feed toos were Topix and Feedster. Other ways that I was able to local news feeds was searching google by typing popular blogs. I was able to find useful news feeds such as engadget.

My experience with blogline Week 4 RSS news feeds

The exercise of creating the blogline was simple. It took me quite a while to teach myself the steps of adding newsfeeds, but I finally succeeded. I have a total of 18 news feeds. My feeds include BBC News, National Geographic News, The Shifted Librarian, About Cats, and About Dogs. I also subscribed to 2 of the HCPL staff blogs.
